Homemade Pizza Recipe
Making pizza at home is fun and allows you to customize it to your liking. Here’s a simple recipe to create a delicious homemade pizza from scratch.
Ingredients
For the Dough:
- 2 ¼ teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- ¾ cup warm water (about 110°F or 43°C)
- 2 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
For the Topping:
- 1 cup pizza sauce (store-bought or homemade)
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- Your choice of toppings (pepperoni, bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, olives, etc.)
- Dried oregano and basil (optional)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Dough
- Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- Mix the Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture and olive oil.
- Knead the Dough: Mix until a dough forms. Transfer it to a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Let it Rise: Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
Step 2: Preheat the Oven
- Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C) and place a pizza stone or baking sheet inside to heat up.
Step 3: Shape the Pizza
- Roll Out the Dough: Once the dough has risen, punch it down and transfer it to a floured surface. Roll it out into your desired shape (round or rectangular) and thickness.
- Transfer to a Peel: If using a pizza stone, transfer the rolled-out dough onto a pizza peel dusted with flour or cornmeal. If using a baking sheet, place the dough directly on it.
Step 4: Add Toppings
- Spread the Sauce: Evenly spread pizza sauce over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges.
- Add Cheese and Toppings: Sprinkle mozzarella cheese over the sauce and add your desired toppings. Finish with a sprinkle of dried oregano and basil if you like.
Step 5: Bake the Pizza
- Carefully slide the pizza onto the preheated pizza stone or place the baking sheet in the oven. Bake for about 10-15 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is bubbly.
Step 6: Serve
- Remove the pizza from the oven and let it cool for a minute. Slice it up and enjoy your homemade pizza!
Tips
- Experiment with different sauces like pesto or Alfredo for unique flavors.
- Try using a mix of cheeses for added richness.
- For a crispy crust, consider par-baking the dough for 5 minutes before adding toppings.
